Some publishers offer their authors the opportunity to publish e-books as "open access". The open access publication fees are paid to the publishers by the authors or by third parties on their behalf. This enables all interested parties in research and practice to access the publications immediately and everywhere free of charge. The authors retain the copyright and the contributions are usually published under a Creative Commons license, which regulates the reuse and further use of the content.

Free formulations are also transported in subfield $a, the subfields $f and $2 are then not used. A link to the text of the license can be given in subfield $u.
